Could this cause a sidewall tear?

A few weeks back my buddy was antagonizing me and so i jokingly depressed his valve stem for a brief second out of light hearted spite. Later that day that tire had a tear in the side wall. while coincidental, i find it entirely hard to believe that my short releasing of his valve stem caused his sidewall to tear. Do you have any insight either way on this issue?
