Would it be unwise or unsafe to bring my iPod with me out in the streets of Guangzhou?

I'm from Canada, everyone here uses iPods or some kind of electronic device. It's my first time going to Guangzhou and I've heard that I shouldn't have my iPod or any other kind of electronic out while roaming there. Is this true, should I really be worried? Should I just leave it at where I'm staying?
