In Warhammer 40k what is the difference between each type of soldier?

for example a cadian and a catachan of the imperial guard. i have recently bought the imperial guard codex and in the profile section it makes no indication that either of them are different in any way and that you just buy a squad of anything regardless of their type. i am very confused!!!!!!! :s
